Week 13- W/C 17.7.23

Wow! What a busy, exciting, fun week we have had!!!

Maths – We reviewed counting in 2s,5s,10s, and explored place value (tens and ones) using place value arrow cards.

English- This week we created our own acrostic poems (summer theme). We also wrote amazing acrostic poems about ourselves.  

D&T and History- We made vehicles using junk modelling. We tried to include everything we have learnt about mechanism- wheels and axles in D&T.

Week 12- W/C 10.7.23‎ 

We had an exciting week. We met our new teachers, spent time in Year 2 ‎classroom and had a very positive experience. ‎

Maths –We identified whether a shape has been halved/quartered or not. We ‎also identified and found halves of an amount in the context of shapes.‎

Next week we will continue with fractions and review word problems, counting ‎in 2s,5s,10s, and place value (tens and ones).‎

English- We finished our topic of explanation text and wrote our own ‎explanation text about ‘What is it like to be in Year 1?’. Next week we will ‎create acrostic poems. ‎

Week 11- W/C 3.7.23 

We had such a wonderful sports week and we had so much fun taking part in different sport activities.  

Maths –This week we focused on finding half and quarter of an amount. Next week we will find half and quarter of shapes.  

English- This week we sequenced the text and innovated it (made changes). Next week we will write our own explanation text about ‘What is it like to be in Year 1?’ 

History- We learnt about ‘Rainhill Trials’ and compared trains from the past to trains today.  

Transition - This week we also welcomed Reception class to our classroom and explained to them about Year 1. We also had a chance to play with them. 

We also had a discussion and shared our thoughts and feelings regarding the transition to Year 2. Next week we will have a transition morning and we will have a chance to spend time with our new teachers in the Year 2 classroom.

Week 10- W/C 26.6.23 

Maths –This week we introduced the clock, clockwise and anticlockwise turns and learnt how to tell the time (O’clock and half past). We also started learning about fractions (half) and sharing into equal groups. Next week we will continue with fractions, and we will learn how to find half and quarter of an amount.   

English- This week we learnt the text using acting and drama, we also wrote facts about our body and how to stay healthy. Next week we will sequence the text and innovate it (make changes).  

PSHE- We discussed about appropriate physical contact. We talked about the difference between ‎acceptable and unacceptable physical contact.‎

English - Explanation text - How to stay healthy?

Week 9- W/C 19.6.23 

We had such a great week! We had our school trip to the pig sanctuary, and we had the best time! 

Maths –This week we focused on division (Sharing and Grouping Problems). We learnt that division is sharing into equal groups and that we can share the same number into different equal groups. For example: we can share 20 into 2 groups of 10, 4 groups of 5, 5 groups of 4 and 10 groups of 2. Next week we will explore the clock and learn how to tell the time  (recognise the minute and hour hands, O'clock, half past and intervals of time).

English- We completed our ‘Hot task’ and wrote a set of instructions independently. We are so proud of our writing so we displayed our fabulous work on the wall in the corridor for everyone to see. Our next topic in English is explanation text and we will focus on ‘How to stay healthy’.  

Science- This week in science, we made our own rain gauges to measure how much it rains over the next couple of weeks. We will be recording this information in tables. We discussed how the results would be different in different places in the world and why - such as in Africa and the Amazon Rainforest. 

Ivrit- We learnt the letter Koof (ืง) and practised writing our Hebrew letters.

Week 8- W/C 12.6.23 

Maths – We continued multiplication and focused on counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Next week we will start division (Sharing and Grouping Problems). 

English- We changed the model text and planned our own set of instructions.  

Next week we will complete our ‘Hot task’ and write a set of instructions using everything we have learnt about instructional writing.   

History – This week we compared the flyer (first aeroplane) to the modern aeroplane. Next week we will find out the importance of aeroplanes and how some tasks were carried out before the aeroplane was invented.‎

Week 7- W/C 5.6.23 

We had such a great week! On Wednesday we had our class assembly, and we were brilliant!  

Maths – We continued repeated addition and multiplication. Next week we will look at Multiplication – Problem Solving (identifying the number of groups and size of a group)โ€ฏ 

English- We recapped verbs and focused on imperative verbs (bossy verbs – cut, put, take, get). We also learnt that adverbs describe the verbs and often end in - ly (carefully, quickly, gently). We worked with a partner to identify features of instructional text. Next week we will innovate the text and write our own set of instructions.  

Computing- We learnt how to add sounds to our animated story books. Next week we will learn how to add a background to our story.  

RE day – We learnt about the shape of a Buddhist temple. We know that Buddhists believe that the universe is made up of five main things. These are called the five elements (Earth, water, fire, air, wisdom).

R.E- We learnt that the Buddhist temples are designed to symbolise five elements: fire, air, water, earth and wisdom.

We had such a lovely surprise today. The local fire brigade came to tell us all about what they do for the community. The children were given a tour of the truck, asked questions and were even lucky enough to squirt the water hose that is used to put out fires.

Week 6- W/C 22.5.23

What a busy and exciting week we have had!

Maths – We continued repeated addition and multiplication. After the half term break, we will continue this topic and focus on arrays (2’s, 5’s and 10’s).

English- We acted out the text map and followed the instructions ‘How to make a jam sandwich’. After the half term break, we will look at features of instructional text, verbs and adverbs.

PSHE- We described some of the choices we make about our behaviour.

We also explained some consequences of making good and not-so-good choices. After the half term break we will start a new topic ‘Safety & The Changing Body’.

Week 5- W/C 15.5.23 

We had a fantastic week, full of learning and fun. 

Maths – This week we found out that even numbers can be shared equally into two groups and odd numbers cannot. We also learnt what a remainder is (the amount "left over" after sharing equally). Next week we will look at repeated addition and arrays.   

English- We started a new topic- instructional writing. We learnt the text map and made up actions. Next week we will use drama and props to learn the text, we might even make real jam sandwiches…  

PSHE- We discussed how to be a positive learner and recognised helpful thoughts and not so-helpful thoughts.  We discussed what I can do if I find my learning difficult. Next week we will identify good and not-so-good behaviour choices. We will discuss and explain consequences of making good and not-so-good choices.

Week 4- W/C 8.5.23

Maths – This week we realised that the same volume of liquid can look different in different size containers. We also measured length using rulers and measured weight using scales and cubes. Next week we will finish our measures topic and introduce multiplication and division (sharing into equal/unequal groups).

English- This week we did some innovations and planned our own traditional tale. Next week we will write our tales and edit them. We will include all the features we have learnt (sentence openers, interesting characters, adjectives, a setting, a problem, a happy ending and a moral.

PSHE- We discussed unkind behaviour and learnt the difference between friendly joking, teasing and bullying. We also discussed what we can do if we see unkind behaviour.

Maths- measures

Week 3- W/C 1.5.23 

MathsWe practised counting by 10’s and compared volumes in containers of the same size. Next week we will compare the same volume in different size containers, measure length using rulers (centimetres) and weigh objects using non-standard units (cube). 

English- This week we sequenced the story into a boxing up model (beginning, middle and end), we also changed the characters in the traditional tale and started to write a new version for the Tortoise and the Hare. We changed it to “The Snail and the Cheetah”. Next week we will continue with innovation and plan our own traditional tale. 

Geography- We learnt about the rainforest and looked how people live there. We looked at their homes, food, appearance and compared our lives to theirs.

Week 2- W/C 24.4.23 

We had a wonderful week!  

MathsWe ordered and compared different combinations of coins and recapped counting by 2’s and 5’s. Next week we will recap counting by 10’s and start our measures topic. We will compare volumes in containers of the same size (Key vocabulary: volume, container,  full, half full, half empty, empty, almost full, almost empty). 

English- This week we used drama, masks, and puppets to retell the story ‘The Tortoise and the Hare’. We also looked at features, came up with interesting sentence openers and character descriptions.  

PSHE - We discussed how to be a good listener and why it is important to listen to others. We completed a listening activity with a partner and understood how to show that we are listening (eyes are looking, ears are listening, lips are closed, hands are calm, feet are still).
