Week 10- W/C 13.3.23 

This week we celebrated STEM week! We looked at inventions from the past and present, we designed our own invention and made a prototype/model of it. We had an online session about tractors and space and a Circus workshop. 

Maths – We looked at word problems and learnt how to identify key information and how to calculate the missing number.  Next week we will continue with problem solving and compare number to 20 (difference, more, less, fewer).  

English- This week we completed our Hot task and wrote letters to someone who we chose. We used everything we have learnt about letters and produced fantastic work. Next week we will learn about shape poems, adjectives, alliteration, similes and features.

Week 9- W/C 6.3.23 

This week we celebrated Purim, enjoyed the snow, and even found time to learn and produce amazing work!  

Maths – We learnt how to identify if a part or the whole is missing and how to calculate a missing number. Next week we will look at word problems, learn how to identify key information and how to calculate the missing number.   

English- This week we made some changes to our story map and we wrote the new version of our story. Next week we will finish our topic by writing a letter independently, using everything we have learnt about letter writing.  

Next week we will celebrate STEM week. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). We will have a special assembly on Monday, STEM lessons during the week, Circus workshop on Thursday and will complete a Lego Challenge on Friday.

Week 8- W/C 27.2.23 

What a busy week we have had!

We were so lucky to have the opportunity to take part in the 5th Festival of spoken Ivrit. We watched a live show about “The Fisherman and The Goldfish” and learnt that we should be happy with what we have.  The show was in Hebrew and English and the children really enjoyed it. 

We also celebrated World Book Day on Thursday and took part in a wonderful drama session about the Very Hungry Caterpillar. 

Maths – This week we focused on total numbers in different ways and number bonds to 20. Next week we will learn how to identify if a part or the whole is missing.  

English- This week we looked at the features of a letter, question words and facts. Next week we will innovate (make changes) in our story map and write our own version of the story map.

Week 7- W/C 20.2.23 

This week we mentioned Safer internet day. Our focus was on how to make safe choices online and discussed why it’s important to make safe viewing choices. We looked at age rating symbols and talked about who can help us or advice if we need help.  

Maths – This week we looked at ‘think 10’ method when subtracting. Next week we will explore different ways to total the same value (for example:  10+2 = 6+6) and number bonds to 20.  

English- Our English lessons this half term are based on the book ‘Dear Greenpeace’. We learnt a story map and practised retelling the story using actions. Next week we will focus on features of an informal letter (address, date, greeting…), questions and facts. History- We started our topic “The Greatest Explorers” and we learnt what an explorer is, what type of personality they should have and which equipment explorers might need.  

RE day- We looked at Buddhism place of worship and the rules you must follow if you go inside. We also designed our own Buddhism temple.

We mentioned Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday) by having a pancake race. We had so much fun!

We received a letter from Leo the Lion, our class teddy. We replied to him and posted it in the letter box.

Week 6- W/C 6.2.23

This week was full of activities and learning.

Throughout the week we enjoyed different activities for Mental Health week. We learnt that we need to look after our own mental health, that we should connect with others and share our worries with people that we trust.

MathsThis week we continued using ‘think 10’ method when adding numbers to 20.  After half term we will look at ‘think 10’ method when subtracting.

English- This week we worked so hard and wrote our own non-chronological reports!!! We used all the skills that we learnt this term in our writing and produced fantastic written work! After half term our focus will be on how to write an informal letter and our work will be based on the book ‘Dear Greenpeace’.

Week 5- W/C 30.1.23 

Maths – This week we learnt how to use ‘think 10’ method when adding numbers to 20. Next week we will continue with ‘think 10’ method.  

English- This week it was storytelling week. We worked in two groups, each group learnt a story, practised how to retell the story using actions, different voices and drama. On Friday, each group performed the story in front of the other group. We had so much fun! Next week we will continue with non-chronological report and write our own report.

Week 4- W/C 23.1.23 

We had such an exciting week!  

We received our first Siddur at our Chagigat Siddur and used them during morning Tefilah and Kabbalat Shabbat!  

Maths – This week we practised ordering the days of the week and months of the year. We also learnt how to look at a timetable and sequence events. Next week we will learn how to use the ‘think 10’ method when adding numbers to 20.  Please encourage your child to practise number bonds to 10.

English- This week we changed the original text about the Frost dragon and came up with our own creative ideas. We thought about our dragon’s appearance, habitat and food and wrote/drew it on a story map. We will continue this topic after Storytelling week.

Week 3- W/C 16.1.23 

Maths – This week we compared mass and speed. We used comparing language such as lighter, heavier, faster, fastest, slower, slowest…Next week we will learn how to sequence events and will focus on the days of the week and months of the year.  

English- This week we focused on adjectives and conjunctions. We also sequenced a non-chronological report into a box up model (title, introduction, subheadings, question, diagram/picture). Next week we will innovate the original text and plan our own non- chronological report.  

Geography- Our current topic is ‘Animals and their habitats’. Every week we look at the world map and name the different continents. Every lesson we focus on one animal and one continent. This week we looked at the whale shark’s habitat,  next week we will find out information about the African Elephant.

Week 2- W/C 9.1.23 

We had a fabulous and busy week in Year 1.  

Science- We are learning all about animals including humans in science. As part of this, we had a very special visitor in this week. Emmy’s mum kindly brought their dog Shiloh in to visit as part of our lesson on mammals. All the children had a chance to stroke him and ask questions. We look forward to our next dog visitor on Wednesday. 

Maths – This week focused on 3D shapes. We went on a shape hunt around the school and looked at 3D shape properties.  We also started our next topic- ‘The Language of Comparing’ We compared heights and lengths of different objects. Next week we will continue with this topic and compare mass and speed.   

English- This half term our topic is ‘non-chronological report’. We know that it is a text that gives us information and doesn’t have to be in specific order. We practised telling a non-chronological report about Frost Dragons using a story map. Next week we will focus on adjectives and conjunctions.

Week 1- W/C 3.1.23 

Welcome to Spring term! This term our learning becomes more formal and we learn new routines and expectations. We had a successful week and all children settled into the new routines beautifully!  Well done Year 1!  

D&T week- We looked at different fruit and vegetables, we learnt how to identify if a food is a fruit or a vegetable. Then, explored where plants grow and which parts we eat. We tasted fruit and vegetables and described their: appearance/feel, smell and taste. Finally, we made fruit and vegetable smoothies.  

Maths – This week we looked at 2D shapes and their properties, we used mathematical language when describing the shapes’ properties: sides, corners/vertices, flat, round, curved, straight ext.). Next week we will focus on 3D shapes. 

JS- We learnt about The Creation story and what God created each day.  

Geography- Our new topic is Animals and their habitats. This week we learnt about the Emperor penguin and the continent Antarctica. Next week we will learn about the Asian Panda.

D&T week - Fruit and vegetables

PSHE- working with others. We tried to complete the ‘spaghetti tower’ challenge, focusing on team work, listening to others, sharing ideas and using kind and encouraging language.

Week 15- W/C 19.12.22 

We had such a great week! We had our Celebration of Faith show and we were amazing! We lit Chanukah candles every day, had a special Chanukah lunch, and even had doughnuts!  

Maths – This week we explored odd and even numbers. We know that an even number is a number that can be shared into two equal groups and an odd number is a number that cannot be shared into two equal groups. After the break we will look at 2D and 3D shapes.  

English- This week we wrote our own version of the story ‘The Little Red Hen’. We wrote the beginning, middle and end of the story and produced amazing pieces of writing! Well done Year 1! 

PSHE- we discussed how others show feelings and how to respond. We talked about ‎ways to recognise when other people might feel sad, worried or angry and how ‎we can help them. ‎ 

 

Thank you so much for our lovely gifts, chocolates and kind wishes, we really appreciate it.

We wish you all well over the break and looking forward to seeing everyone back in January.

PSHE- We discussed what makes a person a good friend and we are beginning to understand the importance and traits of positive friendships.

Week 13- W/C 5.12.22 

Maths – This week we compared and ordered numbers to 20, we also explored doubling. Next week we will continue with doubling and halving and learn how to identify odd and even numbers.  
English- This week we read the story ‘The Little Red Hen’ and we learnt the story map with actions. We looked at question words and came up with questions that we want to ask the characters in the story. Next week we will continue with the same story, our focus will be on punctuation.  
 
Celebration of Faith show is fast approaching, we are very excited, and we practise a lot at school. Please can we ask you to encourage your child to practise at home and to learn the words for all the songs. 
 
The weather is turning increasingly colder, please ensure that your children are warmly dressed when coming into school.
